Smooth sailing to real friendships

By Cindy Armstrong

Ten Palestinian and Jewish youths arrived in Cape Town from the Middle East in a joint effort by the Jewish Maritime League (JML) and the Givat Haviva organisation in Israel to learn lessons of reconciliation from South Africa's journey from apartheid to democracy.

One of the aims of the project is to expose the children to life in a country that has overcome intense political and social strife, bringing them together to promote positive inter-cultural relations through the sport of sailing.

Aged between 13 and 18, the five Jewish and five Palestinian youths will spend 12 days in the city, sailing dinghies and keel boats, sightseeing and visiting community based projects.

Bertie Phillips, committee member of the JML, says that South Africa is being used as a backdrop and that the children are being exposed to its history in order to share the idea of freedom and inter-cultural co-operation---something they have not been exposed to in their own country.

Zeev Shafrir, director of the department of education in Menashe in Israel, is the organiser and selector for the
event.

He says the children are enjoying themselves immensely: "This experience is a gift that has provided opportunities to
kids from all walks of life that they would never have dreamt possible."

Suaha Daraushe, 14, an Israeli girl, said yesterday that "being in South Africa is wonderful, it's amazing. I love meeting new people and being exposed to new cultures. I like seeing what South Africa is really like and the people here are also very friendly".
