Subject:Allen Ginsburg

A friend tells me that you are trying to create a memorial in honor of the late Allen Ginsburg this very June and seeing as the beats are of mighty importance to myself and I'll happen to be in the city round abouts this summer I'd like to get any information regarding the event. So if you've got a list, whatever, or just need an extra hand, I'd be willing to be of assistance.

MORE THAN COOL

Date: Tue, 30 Dec 1997 06:48:46 -0500
From: David Roche
Subject: concerning event in central park 6/12-6/13

Attn: Al Aronowitz. I've been a three decade or longer fan of the beats. At the present time I'm in school, in my next to old age, and I'm doing eight credits of study on the beats. your information has been , or I should say, will be, very helpful.

I wouldn't mind reading some of my poetry at the 6/12/97 event. Just a couple weeks before Bill Burroughs died I watched A Junkies Christmas and was inspired to write this poem:

William S. Burroughs

He's cool
the prince of cool,
he's more than cool
he's cold,
as cold as ice,
dry ice,
he has liquid N20
running in his veins.
He's so cold he muses,
"I must be dead, oh well,"
and deliberates no longer
on the matter.

If you'd like to use this poem all I ask is that you mention my name as the author and possessor to all the rights due to an author.

Thank you for your time and God bless.

LONGTIME FAN

Subject: notes from a longtime fan

Dear Mr. Aronowitz:

I just took a look at your Web page, and I am glad that your fine writing is around for folks like me to see. How well I remember a piece you wrote concerning Jimi Hendrix following his death. It appeared, I believe, in a book called No One Waved Goodbye, and the last line was something like "he lived here too, but he never really had a home." It was some of the finest writing I've had the pleasure of having read.

Thank you.

I know fawning words like these don't get you "paid", as the b-boys would say, but its all I have.

Best wishes,

wow man, doing some research for my novel, which sorta has its roots in 1956 SF, North Beach, looking for beat stuff and came upon your page. I love it!! Who are you? Who the hell are you?! I mean, I don't see your name on the web site, but then I didn't look all over, I am working on a deadline right now and just totally pulling my hair out. Anyway! Mostly I was looking for stuff about M. Bodenheim, not too much on him.....

I'll be back to read every word -- later.

GOOD ROOMMATE

From: Ben Schafer
To: info@blacklistedjournalist.com
Subject: AG

Dear Al,

I worked with Allen for the last four years of his life, lived at his apartment on 12th Street for the better part of a year, and never found him to be tyrannical or imperious. In fact, he was the best roommate I ever had -- cleaned up after himself, was quiet, read a lot, clipped interesting articles and shared them, always did his dishes, rinsed the tub, had a lot of good records, and some interesting friends. What more could one ask for in a roommate?

So to answer Valery's question, 'who wasn't?' (fueding with Allen): I wasn't.

MIRIAM PATCHEN NEEDS HELP

Subject: Floods hit Patchen Home

Open Letter to Poets, Artists and Booklovers worldwide

The floods in Palo Alto, California, in early February, 1998, have hit the home of Miriam Patchen, wife of the late poet and painter Kenneth Patchen (1911-1972).

Two feet of water and mud swept through the house taking with it carpets, furniture, books and pictures. Miriam, who is 83, does not have flood insurance and the process of cleaning and rebuilding the house and its contents will take time and money.

Can you help? If so, please send donations to :

The Lively Foundation
2565 Washington Street #4
San Francisco, CA 94115
USA

On the memo line of the check, please write "Patchen Flood Relief"

Thank you very much for anything you can contribute!

Kind regards

Hello,

I'm a junior in high school in Washington, North Carolina. In my English class, we have an assignment to do a research paper on a certain period of time. We're working in groups, and one person does a paper on an aspect of literature of the period, and one on the culture, and one on religion. Our particular group has the time period of 1950-1970. The person writing about religion is doing Charles Manson, but what I really wrote you about is this: my friend is writing his paper on Jack Kerouac, because he's doing literature. I'm researching the Beat Generation, and while searching for information on that topic on the Internet, I came across your page. I just have to say that it's the most awesome thing I've seen in a long time. I read a column or two each night before I go to bed. And when I don't have anything to do during the day, I read columns then, too. We have a lot of the same ideas and beliefs about society and the world around us; perhaps that's why I find you so interesting. I love the Beatles, I love Bob Dylan, and now, I love the poetry of all of the Beat writers. If there's anything specifically you could tell me about his certain period in time, I would greatly appreciate it. Please write me back, and in the mean time, I'll keep reading your columns. Thank you for putting me in my element.

BLOWN AWAY

From: Steve Carbajal
Subject: Re: ALLEN GINSBERG MEMORIAL COMMITTEE

Dear Mr. Aronowitz:

I was blown away by Column 21. I've been looking into the life of Allen Ginsberg recently and I'm just astounded by the life he lead. I don't know if there is a career in studying the life of the Beats or if I'm just wasting my time finding out about these guys.

I would definately like to be on the comittee if that would be possible. I would need to know what resposibilities or duties I would have to do.

When I have more time I want to read the rest of your columns. Column 21 was fantastic. I look forward to hearing from you.

Steve Carbajal
